Posada al Sur Review: Budget Comfort in Montevideo's Historic Ciudad Vieja
If you're a city lover, nothing beats the relief of arriving in an urban hub after weeks in the wilderness. After six weeks traveling from Valparaíso, Chile, through Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego, we flew into Montevideo, Uruguay's capital, in under four hours. Trading wildlife for city energy, we craved a proper rest after enduring overpriced, basic hostels under $50/night.
We needed an adult-friendly stay with home-like amenities at a fair price.

Posada al Sur in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja delivered just that.
Ciudad Vieja has rough edges, with darker streets at night. (Watch for our upcoming 'She Said, She Said' on a foiled robbery attempt—we lost nothing and caused a scene.)
Inside, worries faded. This posada balances functionality, cleanliness, style, and affordability perfectly.
Housed in two renovated colonial buildings, high ceilings and original wooden doors, window frames, and Spanish tiles create a spacious feel. Check-in is at reception in one building, with a new dorm. The main action is next door via marble stairs: five second-floor rooms (four private, one en suite), a six-bed dorm, common room, and kitchen—all opening to a central courtyard. An iron spiral staircase leads to a rooftop and family apartment.
Our room was roomy with a queen bed, single bed, desk, shelves, and three warm blankets for March's autumn chill. No natural light (it faces inward), but kitchen sounds signaled breakfast.
Breakfast was exceptional for the region: fresh bread, organic honey, house jams, dulce de leche, fruit, brewed coffee—served till 11am on a communal table for eight.
The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, cookware, and a large fridge. We cooked meals, enjoying wine, cheese, or coffee like at home. Try nearby Jacinto for upscale, simple dining.
Shared bathrooms (three toilets/showers) were spotless, bright, and homey, with ample hot water.
The common room features street-view balconies for people-watching, computers, internet, and bookshelves. But seating (table or antique chairs) lacks comfort—cozy chairs or a sofa would elevate it.
Owners (a co-op of locals) offer great value, though not chatty post our robbery drama. They provided city maps, dental referrals, and bike routes ($5 half-day, $10 full-day). Cycle the promenade from Ciudad Vieja to Pocitos beaches.
Fast, reliable Wi-Fi suited digital nomads like us.
Standout Feature: Welcoming Ambience
From rain, adrenaline, or winds, Posada al Sur felt like friends' home. Natural light, art, books, and knick-knacks enhanced the cozy vibe. Our spacious room and communal kitchen fostered relaxation and guest chats.

Room for Improvement: Locks and Keys
Traditional skeleton keys frustrate—fumbling at night, one lock issue. Modern locks would suit this renovated gem.
Room for Improvement: Execution Gaps
Good intentions falter: breakfast honey was organic, but not all; cornflakes over granola disappointed. Social posters lack clear owner ties—more transparency needed.

Overall: Posada al Sur Verdict
Ideal for us: spacious rooms, quality beds, stocked kitchen, hot water, clean baths, Wi-Fi, hearty breakfast. Prime location near port, coast, market, Plaza Independencia—poised for Ciudad Vieja's revival.
