Explore Grutas de la Estrella: Tonatico’s Premier Natural Wonder

The Underground World of Tonatico
Fascinating for being the most visited tourist attraction in Tonatico, the Grutas de la Estrella is a natural rock formation were you can find guided tours of its interior. Its name is due to the large star-shaped stone that is located on the top of the mountain.

An amazing structure that took 500 thousand years to form and that today you have the opportunity to enter it. To be better appreciated, it has been equipped with purple and blue lights giving it a special glow to make your walk a rewarding experience.

Descending its 400 steps gives a feeling of excitement and adrenaline at the same time while discovering the natural wonders at the bottom of the Grutas de la Estrella, because while you enjoy the trip, you will not realize that you have already descended 100 meters (over 300 feet) underground.

What to do in the Grutas de la Estrella?
As it is a unique attraction in Tonatico, formed by nature, you have the possibility of undertaking this trip on foot, or for the more intrepid, through the Zapote, an underground river with cold waters that will give you an exciting experience.

If you are excited by the idea of swimming in the depths of the Grutas de la Estrella, we recommend doing it in the month of June, because afterwards, this activity is suspended since during the rainy season the water to rises. This is for safety reasons.

This wonder is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. at 17:00 p.m. You can get there by car following the road to Ixtapan de la Sal, from there, five minutes ahead you will find Tonatico and a few meters further on, you will find the deviation to the Grutas de la Estrella.
