Living Like a True Local in Dubai: Insider Tips from a 10-Year Resident
Hayley Skirka, a Lonely Planet Local and UAE resident for nearly 10 years—mostly in Dubai—shares her authentic take on the city. Having explored iconic landmarks and countless desert safaris, she now uncovers what makes Dubai truly liveable.
Her days involve paddleboarding from new launch spots and trying the city's booming yoga classes. Evenings feature sundowners, comedy nights, and pub quizzes for a relaxed vibe.
When friends visit… I take them to brunch. They're blown away by the extravagant buffets, unlimited drinks, and live entertainment. For high-energy parties, Saffron at Atlantis The Palm is unbeatable. For a food-centric experience, El Sur at Westin Mina Seyahi shines. After recovering, we head to Old Dubai for authentic souvenirs, fresh coconut water, and an abra ride from Deira to Bur Dubai. Don't miss gold-class cinema—perfect for hot months—followed by sunset views from At The Top at Burj Khalifa.
For a big night out… we start with dinner at The Maine, savoring fresh oysters paired with Aperol spritz. Service is impeccable, and the weekend buzz is electric. Next, drinks at Copper Dog, a faithful replica of its Scottish Highland counterpart. We end at Barasti, a 20-year Dubai icon. Skip the crowds, enjoy alfresco dancing on three levels, beach shisha, and live entertainment till dawn.
For cheap eats… Ravi's original Satwa branch draws everyone with authentic Indian-Pakistani dishes at unbeatable prices. Pile on the food—paneer butter (Dhs20, vs. Dhs50+ elsewhere) rivals butter chicken. Eat with your hands for the full experience.
A typical weekend… starts with early paddleboarding at the less-crowded beach by Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. Lunch at Maison Mathis offers top pizzas and rare non-hotel wine. Dinner at Nola Eatery and Social House brings live music and New Orleans flavors.
Best date spot… Pier 7, with seven restaurants and bars across seven floors, all marina-facing. Switch venues easily via elevator. Fume on level one is my pick: wholesome sharing plates, killer cocktails, and romantic waterside views.
To escape the city… I drive to Fujairah on the UAE's north coast. Cooler temps and mountain scenery feel worlds away.
For my 30th birthday, I splurged on… a yacht with a top-deck hot tub, cruising the World Islands with friends.
I know I'm a Dubaite because… I forget to pump my own petrol in Scotland, and I wake expecting sunshine daily.
