Living Like a Local in Doha: Insider Tips from a Long-Time Resident

Polly Byles, a Lonely Planet Local, moved to Doha five years ago to join her partner in Qatar. With limited prior knowledge of this small peninsula nation, she quickly fell in love with its capital for its year-round sunshine, safe and luxurious lifestyle, and as the home to her growing family.

When friends visit... We always start at the Museum of Islamic Art, the city's most captivating museum and my top spot for skyline photos. Next, we grab ice cream at the MIA Park cafe for unbeatable Gulf views, watching traditional dhows glide by until the stunning Arabian sunset.

For family days off... We escape to Qatar's beaches or deserts to soak up the sun and stunning landscapes. Favorites include TaliaMare Beach Club on The Pearl Qatar for boho relaxation and excellent pizza, Sealine Beach for dune bashing and camel rides, and the western desert's dramatic rock formations and sculptures.

For affordable eats... Yee Hwa excels in authentic Korean and Japanese cuisine. This unpretentious spot draws expats with its extensive menu of table-grilled meats, noodles, and sushi.

A typical evening... After evening prayers, we visit Souq Waqif or Souq Al Wakrah for authentic Middle Eastern street food, shisha, and market haggling amid camels, falcons, and cozy cafes.

An unmissable experience... Friday brunch at Doha's hotels. These epic all-afternoon buffets feature international cuisine, live music, and entertainment—just pace yourself to avoid an early nap!

I could spend all day... At The Pearl Qatar, our manmade island home. Explore Porto Arabia's yacht marina, Qanat Quartier's pastel villas, Medina Centrale's eateries, designer shops, and art galleries—connected by stylish water taxis.

One downside... The scorching summers exceeding 40°C, driving residents indoors or abroad during the 'summer exodus' from June to August until September's revival.

For a green escape... Doha's parks like Museum of Islamic Art Park for views, Hotel Park for serenity, and Al Bidda Park for paths, BBQs, and playgrounds.

For celebrations... Nobu at the Four Seasons—the largest in the chain. This architectural gem offers top-tier Japanese fare, unique afternoon tea, omakase menus, and skyline views from its rooftop bar.

I know I'm a Doha local because... I gripe about the heat but love it; overindulge weekly with excuses; and endlessly sweep sand from my balcony.
