Louisiana's Enduring Spirit: #VisitLakeCharles Photo of the Month
I discovered this month's Photo of the Month shortly after Hurricane Harvey struck Texas and parts of Southwest Louisiana. Stories of the heroic Cajun Navy and countless volunteers from across the state rushing to aid those affected inspired us all. For those unable to help in person, donations and prayers poured in.
This image filled me with immense pride for Louisiana's unwavering commitment to helping others, embodying our natural Southern hospitality and familial bonds.

The pelican, Louisiana's state bird and flag emblem, carries profound symbolism. An ancient legend depicts the mother pelican wounding her breast to feed her young with her blood during famine—a powerful emblem of sacrifice and nurture, much like this photo evokes.

Photographer Kristie Ford captured this stunning, serendipitous moment.
“I was at Calcasieu Landing for a sunset shot… Sometimes we call it Pelican Landing because pelicans often gather there. This night, as the sun set, I turned east and saw this pelican perfectly aligned with the tugboat's colorful lights—both poised for their portrait.”
Stay strong, friends.
