Polaroid of the Week: Quito's Majestic Basílica del Voto Nacional
Thrilled to return to South America after nearly 11 months since leaving Colombia. Recent visits to Mexico in April and November make the region's vibrant energy feel familiar.
The chaotic traffic, bustling markets and plazas, constant horns, speakers, megaphones, and ubiquitous street food vendors capture Latin America's essence.
Quito, Ecuador's capital and my first stop, stands out with women in traditional indigenous attire—long skirts, braids, hats, and colorful shawls—reminiscent of Bolivia. At over 9,200 feet, it's the world's second-highest capital after La Paz, and the altitude noticeably affected me, echoing my Bolivia trip three years ago.
Detailed Quito insights coming soon. While I didn't fully connect during my four days, experiences were worthwhile: wandering the UNESCO-listed Historic Old Town, visiting stunning churches like the Basílica del Voto Nacional (largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas, pictured above), savoring Ecuadorian hot chocolate in the modern district, exploring the main park, and browsing the central market. Year-round 60°F temps and daily rain may have tempered the 'wow' factor. I'll revisit as a base for Cotopaxi mountain biking and Otavalo market—Ecuador's capital may yet charm me.
Next: Galápagos Islands!
