If you are coming by car, you should drive 50 minutes if you are coming from Tepic, the capital of Nayarit; two hour and a half from Puerto Vallarta and 2 hours and 40 minutes from Guadalajara. The weather at Compostela, Nayarit, is warm and the hottest months are April and May.The rainy season starts from July to September. Average weather is 23º C, so bring light clothing.

 

Compostela is located at the Valle of Cactlan, before the arrival of Spaniards this pĺace was inhabited by the Cacnos and the Tepehuanos. Both groups belonged to the kingdoms of Chimalhuacán.

 

Nuño de Guzmán arrived here in 1530, and a year later he founded Nueva Galicia under the orders of the queen Juana de Castilla, who also asked that one of the cities received the name of Santiago de Galicia de Compostela.

 

During XVI and XVII centuries in Compostela, minery was the main activity and in the valleys tobacco was harvested. Nowadays you can still find small factories that are still producing handcrafted cigars.
You can also take home one of the beautiful handcrafted leather goods by the artisans of the region.
