Explore Zimapán: A Hidden Gem of Hidalgo's Sierra Gorda

The Sierra Gorda is born in Hidalgo state as a branch of the Sierra Madre Occidental and ends at San Luis Potosíafter traverse Querétaro and Guanajuato. It is just there where the mountain chain starts and where you will find the Magic Town of Zimapan, a town of a miner and colonial charm and also a place full of natural wonders in which you will be able to have 1 or two weekends full of adventures.

 

Before sailing in its dam, you can walk through its canyons or try its thermal waters. Take your time to explore the streets of this town and its hill that even though is small, it is guarded by the San Juan Bautista Parish, which is totally built in quarry. You can also taste the traditional gastronomy of the place like: barbacoa, cecina, enchiladas, escamoles, pulque and for dessert pastes and fruity wine.

 

One of the most popular attractions in this Magic Town is the Fernando Hiriart Dam, that flows through the Infiernillo Canyon. This place is great for doing rappel, climbing or trekking through its impressive semi desert landscapes.

 

You can also visit the National Park Los Marmoles, here you will find a via ferrata to go to the top of the hills and an English Style village that still maintains some of the ruins from the iron smelter. It is said that it was here in where some of the pieces of The Eiffel Tower in París were produced.

 

But the natural wonders of this spot continue. For example, you can visit The Vigilante,a monolith with a human face, you can go up to have an incredible view of the sierra. You can also take a tour on a quad bike through the Xajhá grotto and enjoy its thermal waters.
