41st Annual Contraband 5 Miler: Southwest Louisiana's Premier Road Race in Lake Charles
Lace up your shoes—Southwest Louisiana's favorite road race is just weeks away!
Runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities are gearing up for the 41st Annual Contraband 5 Miler, starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 13 from the Capital One Tower in downtown Lake Charles.

Launched in 1976 with a small group of runners behind the Civic Center, the race followed a lakefront route to the Port of Lake Charles and back. As popularity grew alongside Contraband Days—and the need for more vendor space arose—the start line shifted to the Capital One Tower. Organized by Lake Area Runners, it's one of Southwest Louisiana's largest running events.

I first ran this race in 2013 and have been hooked ever since. The scenic course along Shell Beach Drive showcases stunning Lake Charles views. Afterward, enjoy live music, food, and beer—perfect motivation for an early Saturday start!
The top three overall male and female finishers earn cash prizes. Age-group awards go to the top three males and females in these categories: 1-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.
Registration is $40 in advance or $45 on race day. T-shirts (shown below) are guaranteed only until May 5, 2017. Packet pickup: Friday, May 12, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. at The Running Store (3311 Ernest St.).
