Ultimate Travel Packing Guide for Runners: Essentials from a Marathon Trainee
Last year, during our two-month stay in New York City, I rediscovered running after years away from it. Inspired by the vibrant spring weather, fellow runners on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and breathtaking city views, I lost track of time on my runs—often returning home 90 minutes or two hours later, much to my partner Jess's concern. It was a joyful, sustainable form of exercise I could envision doing indefinitely.
In November, back in NYC for the New York Marathon, we cheered on a friend near the Central Park finish line. The electric atmosphere hooked me—I decided then to train for my own marathon.
Once back at sea level after the high-altitude Andes (4,000 meters/13,000 feet, where running was impossible), I resumed training. Planning my NYC return, I eyed local races. The Brooklyn Half Marathon on May 17 was sold out, so I registered for the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K in Central Park this Saturday. It's a starter race, but I'll sign up for more right after.
Running daily during recent travels, including Malta, I've refined my packing list to include essential running gear, making my backpack noticeably fuller.
For travelers incorporating running into their trips, here's my curated list of must-pack essentials, drawn from real-world experience:
Antiperspirant Deodorant
Running demands more than basic deodorant—opt for a strong antiperspirant that controls sweat effectively. For men, something robust like Lynx Body Spray works wonders.
Laundry Soap Sheets
These ultra-thin detergent sheets (a pack of 50 is smaller than travel shampoo) are travel game-changers for washing sweaty gear without daily laundromats.
Reusable Water Bottle & SteriPEN
I've long packed a reusable bottle, but daily runs make it indispensable. Pair it with a SteriPEN for safe water purification worldwide, ditching single-use plastics.
Band-Aids
Blisters are inevitable—keep plenty on hand.
Ibuprofen
My go-to pain reliever and anti-inflammatory saved my knee during Malta training, quickly reducing swelling and discomfort.
Running Shoes
Pack a dedicated pair. Don't double up with sightseeing shoes like my Asics—it shortens their life and risks foot issues.
Running Gear: Fabletics
Ditch cotton for moisture-wicking synthetics. I upgraded from one to two outfits: long-sleeve shirt, tank top, two pairs of leggings, running socks (no cotton!), and a supportive sports bra. Fabletics (launched 2013) personalizes based on lifestyle—my pants, bra, and tank are favorites for both runs and casual wear. At $39.90 for a 3-piece set, they're a steal; I'll order more soon!
Additional Essentials
Podcasts fuel my runs, so my iPod and headphones are staples. A portable battery charger is a lifesaver for my aging iPod Touch. For app tracking, it's equally vital (mine cost $20). I use an
exercise armband for my iPod. Long-haired runners: pack extra hair ties.
