Polaroid of the Week: Discovering Trastevere's Timeless Charm in Rome
I was thrilled to return to Rome at the end of my recent Italy trip—a city I hadn't visited in years but had always adored. With limited time, I focused on Trastevere, my favorite neighborhood on the west bank of the Tiber River (its name literally means "across the Tiber"). While Rome's iconic sites like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, and Pantheon draw crowds to the east bank, Trastevere remains somewhat less visited, aside from the essential Vatican stop nearby.
Trastevere captivates with authentic Italian architecture, picturesque piazzas, pedestrian-friendly cobblestone streets, vibrant outdoor cafés, and restaurants, plus edgy street art that adds a modern twist.
I spent hours wandering its narrow, labyrinthine alleys, admiring ivy-draped facades, fresh street art, and cozy cafés. Though tourism has increased since my last visits—it's no longer a secret—Trastevere retains its irresistible allure. If you're in Rome, cross the Tiber; Lonely Planet offers an excellent one-day itinerary highlighting must-see spots.
My explorations eventually led back to the east bank for an unmissable ritual: the Trevi Fountain. This Baroque masterpiece is Rome's most ornate fountain and holds a legendary promise—toss a coin over your shoulder, and you'll return. The tradition echoes ancient Roman practices of offering coins to water gods for safe travels and homecomings.
It's worked for me every time, and I'm already eager for my next Rome adventure! 😊
