Great American Road Trip 2011: Biking Washington D.C. to the MLK Memorial Amid Hurricane Irene
What an unforgettable day in the nation's capital! We kicked off with bikes from Capital Bikeshare and visited Capital City Diner in Northeast D.C. This quirky spot was bought on eBay and trucked in from New York—a fun local gem, though it could benefit from a makeover by Food Network's Robert Irvine.
Afterward, we biked to the Capitol Building for a free 45-minute tour. The architecture is breathtaking and well worth the time!

We zipped through iconic memorials, museums, and glimpsed the original Declaration of Independence at the National Archives. The afternoon's highlight: the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, soft-launched that week. Its official dedication was postponed by Hurricane Irene, but crowds of proud visitors posing for photos with the statue underscored its powerful impact—far more personal than snapshots of other sites.

With Hurricane Irene approaching, tomorrow's drive south hangs in the balance. Fingers crossed!
