Great American Road Trip 2011: Washington, DC Amid Hurricane Irene
Rain, rain, go away… As Hurricane Irene approached, Washington, DC, and the East Coast were drenched in wet, gray weather. A sunny morning gave way to heavy rain just as we prepared to depart, prompting us to rearrange our road trip plans through the Carolinas. Unfortunately, we had to skip Virginia Beach, the Outer Banks, and other coastal stops en route to Charleston. Stay tuned for our next destinations!
Luckily, the rain cleared by afternoon, allowing us to head to President Obama's residence…
On our walk, we discovered DC's Capital Bikeshare system, identical to Montreal's, which we adored during our stay there. Dozens of stations dot the city, offering unlimited 30-minute rentals for just $5 all day.
We hopped on bikes, pedaling through DC's vibrant neighborhoods, and capped the evening at the National Mall. The Washington Monument, Capitol Building, and grand structures along Pennsylvania Avenue glowed majestically under a clear night sky.
Tomorrow, rain or shine, we'll explore more of DC on our final day. Share your rainy-day recommendations or favorite neighborhood spots in the capital!
