Epic American Road Trip: Discovering Asheville, NC and the Appalachian Trail
We feel fortunate to have sidestepped the destruction from Hurricane Irene and extend our deepest sympathies to those impacted. This detour led us to Asheville, North Carolina—a hidden gem in the Blue Ridge Mountains we might never have visited on our New York to New Orleans road trip.

‘Keep Asheville Weird’ captures the spirit of this vibrant city, home to independent shops and a creative community dedicated to preserving its unique character. After passing endless chains on the road, stumbling upon Asheville's local focus was a breath of fresh air.

Perfectly positioned for adventure, Asheville offers easy access to western North Carolina's breathtaking mountains. Just 30 minutes north lies Hot Springs, directly on the Appalachian Trail—a 2,100-mile path from Georgia to Maine. We hiked a section, soaking in the town's lively scene: thru-hikers refueling, rafting enthusiasts gearing up, and bikers pausing amid the verdant peaks.

Fifteen minutes south, the picturesque Biltmore Village—developed in the 1890s near America's largest private home, the Biltmore Estate—brims with boutique shops and eateries. Road trippers will appreciate the abundant free parking throughout.

Tonight, we're in Charlotte, NC, eager to explore before heading coastal to Charleston, South Carolina. Share your top Charleston or Savannah, Georgia recommendations! Tweet us, comment on Facebook, or reply here—we'll incorporate as many as possible and credit you.
