Lakes, Castles & Baltic Beaches: The Ultimate Northern Germany Road Trip Itinerary
While my past trips to Germany focused on family visits, Berlin's vibrant energy, and friends in Cologne and Munich, vast regions like northern Germany remained unexplored. High on my list: the Spreewald biosphere reserve, Lübeck's brick Gothic architecture, East Frisia's coast, and the Romantic Road's fairy-tale towns. When a friend suggested meeting beyond Berlin, I planned an affordable road trip. Car rentals from central Berlin started at under $25/day (airport pickups around $24), allowing us to bring my dog along.
This itinerary showcases Germany's nautical north: the Mecklenburg Lake Plateau, Baltic Sea beaches, fairy-tale castles, a grand Hanseatic city, and rural charm. Ideal for 5-7 days, it requires a car for off-the-beaten-path access—trains and buses stick to highways. Rentals are budget-friendly ($23+ for small cars, $25+ for midsize), perfect for pets too! 🙂
Here's our scenic route map (avoiding highways):
