She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?

The world-renowned Iguazu Falls, voted one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011, are celebrated as the most spectacular waterfalls on Earth. While planning our South America adventure, we never imagined skipping them. Yet, from Rosario, Argentina, just one step away, we hesitated: After endless bus journeys, was a 24-hour ride to the falls for just two or three days—followed by another 20-hour trip to Salta—truly worthwhile?

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?After much debate, we gained perspective: This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we'd never be closer. We booked our tickets and embarked, approaching with differing expectations, curious if we'd both deem the detour rewarding.

Jess said:

I was committed to the Iguazu detour but arrived exhausted. Fortunately, the first two days brought gray rain, delaying our visits until days three and four. Puerto Iguazú and our budget hotel disappointed—run-down vibes, itchy beds, and reliable Wi-Fi only at chain spots like Freddo and Bonafide. It screamed tourist trap, heightening my skepticism.

Could this surpass Niagara Falls?

Both straddle borders—Niagara between the U.S. and Canada, Iguazu between Argentina and Brazil—making comparison apt.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?On day three, sun emerged. We took the tourist bus to the Argentine side, bought tickets, entered via turnstiles, and boarded a forest train—another touristy element that irked me. I bit my tongue; Dani was thrilled. But doubt lingered.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Act 1: Hiking forest paths amid crowds, we reached the first platform.

All skepticism vanished instantly.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?The views were breathtaking—unrivaled! Imagine 10 or 20 Niagaras side by side. Nearly 375,000 gallons of water cascade per second in a mesmerizing rush of white, blue, brown, and beige, with mist exploding like fireworks. How long for Patagonia's glaciers to match this flow? Mere seconds?

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?The elevated walkways—steel and wood suspended over the brink—intensified the awe. Mere meters from the edge, falling in would make you insignificant as a droplet. I felt profoundly small... until later.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Act 2: A speedboat on the Iguazu River plunged us under a fall. Gear in dry bags, we were drenched—no Niagara cozy-up here. Eyes squeezed shut against the force, it was pure thrill, instilling deep respect.

Dried off, we trained to Devil’s Throat.

Act 3: Here, over 50% of the river's flow plunges into the Paraná below. Mist soared skyscraper-high, obscuring the abyss. Staring down was mesmerizing.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Next day, Dani explored Brazil solo. U.S. passport holders face a $160 day visa (same as three-month), so I skipped the risk.

Dani said:

After two rainy days in Puerto Iguazú, perfect weather on day three was a relief. Organized tours would've suffered in rain—a far inferior experience. Sunny days promised rainbows and butterflies for my photos.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Hearing the roar before seeing Iguazu, the first glimpse dwarfed Niagara—justifying Eleanor Roosevelt's "Poor Niagara."

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Upper Trail offered overviews; Lower Trail immersed us in the power—drenched by mist, deafened by crashes.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Pre-booked speedboat tickets thrilled: Full-speed under a fall, adrenaline surged as tons of water hit.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Then, Devil’s Throat: 700m wide, 82m high. A 1km walkway over jungle revealed wildlife—a croc and giant catfish near the edge, oblivious to the drop. The U-shaped chasm's perpetual roar was dizzying.

Day four: Brazil solo. Navigating borders, Portuguese, and currency alone felt odd without Jess.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Brazil's bus and 1.5km walkway provided panoramas impossible from Argentina, culminating at Devil’s Throat's platform—water walls on three sides, upper and lower falls framing the view.

She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?She Said, She Said: Was the Detour to Iguazu Falls Worth It?Colorful butterflies enchanted, evoking paradise.

Are Iguazu Falls worth it? Unequivocally yes. Their power—enough for Paraguay's energy and 20% of Brazil's—is incomprehensible until you're beneath them.

Independently touring allowed flexibility to wait out rain—crucial for bucket-list magic and photos. Victoria Falls are larger but lack access; Niagara seems quaint. Iguazu merits its New 7 Wonders status.
