Epic Hike to Laguna de Alegria: From Easy Trail to Mountaineering Adventure in El Salvador
After debating whether to wear hiking shoes for what we anticipated as a straightforward day hike to a lagoon, Dani and I met our guide, Walter, outside our hostel in Alegria, El Salvador. This energetic young man paused sharpening his machete to greet us warmly with handshakes and friendly chatter, despite the imposing tool.
We were thrilled for this excursion, arranged by Roberto, the welcoming owner of Entre Piedras hostel in the charming mountain village of Alegria. Following lackluster days on El Salvador’s Costa del Sol, we had reached this gem, praised by our guidebook as one of the country’s most scenic spots, featuring the Alegria Volcano and Crater Lake just 2km from town.
The previous morning at breakfast, Roberto outlined a trail through verdant coffee plantations, ascending the volcano ridge to Laguna de Alegria. It promised stunning vistas of neighboring volcanoes, mountains, and the distant Pacific Coast, culminating in a descent to the sulfurous lake with hot springs. Eager for activity after lazy beach days, we were hooked at “hike.”
At 8am, with Walter and Roberto (who joined spontaneously), we pondered our choice to venture into the Salvadoran wilderness with two men and their blades—Roberto’s sharp knife for trail fruits, he assured. Trusting our instincts and Walter’s infectious smile, we proceeded through town to the mountain base.
The ascent began with a steep 45-minute climb through coffee fields, sparking lively discussions on El Salvador’s coffee industry amid heavy breathing. At the ridge, breathtaking views awaited, as Walter mapped our route around the crater rim and down to the lake. Gazing at the emerald sulfur lake below in the breeze, the path ahead seemed manageable.
We followed well-trodden paths for 20 minutes to a hilltop guard post. Soldiers inside, casually brushing teeth in underwear, offered little vigilance, though bullet-scarred concrete recalled the civil war (1979–1992).
Beyond, the trail vanished under post-rainy season overgrowth—we were pioneers. Walter machete-cleared a hidden path; later, we learned of scorpions, snakes, and critters in the area.
Solid ground gave way to massive boulders, demanding rock-climbing scrambles like pros (or video game heroes). Our hiking shoes proved wise. The easy hike transformed into mountaineering, with Walter guiding us hand-in-hand while slashing foliage.
After five grueling hours and a slippery gravel descent, we savored the sulfurous lake air with bananas during a hard-earned rest. Returning via a private coffee plantation, we passed workers harvesting beans and children sharing crushed walnuts. Though unplanned, our mountaineering day was utterly rewarding.
