Yellowstone's Grand Canyon: The Majestic 308-Foot Lower Falls
Although I've yet to visit Arizona's iconic Grand Canyon, a knowledgeable Yellowstone local insisted we explore the park's own stunning Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It quickly became a highlight of our trip.
The Lower Falls, one of the canyon's most famous attractions, captivated us immediately. As a waterfall enthusiast and photographer, I found this massive cascade a dream subject.
Arriving at the Lookout Point parking lot, we spotted visitors peering through a telescope at baby osprey in a distant nest on a canyon rock. Our 200mm lens fell short for clear shots, but it added to the excitement.
Merely steps from the lot lies the Lower Falls Lookout Point, offering breathtaking views.
This 308-foot waterfall—the tallest I've witnessed in person—left me speechless. Notice the tiny figures of people at the top right in the photo below, emphasizing its immense scale.

Photography Tip: To achieve the silky water effect, I used a neutral density filter, enabling a 15-second shutter speed despite midday brightness. Settings: f/22, ISO 100.
Lower Falls Video: From Lookout Point, my companion Scott descended the steep trail for a closer view while I opted to stay. Time was limited, and uphill returns looked challenging for all. Watch the video below to see the trail and base perspective.
