Local Ceramic Artist Shelby Roberie Rebuilds and Gives Back to Southwest Louisiana After Hurricanes
In the wake of Southwest Louisiana's 2020 challenges, including two devastating hurricanes, supporting local businesses is crucial for community recovery. Shelby Roberie, a native of the region and owner of a beloved ceramics shop in Welsh, LA, has been serving the community since her college days at McNeese State University, where she earned her bachelor's in art.
Navigating Storm Aftermath
Despite the hardships, Roberie considers herself fortunate. "I got really lucky," she shared, as her equipment and inventory remained intact despite a broken front window and storm damage to her store.
To restore normalcy, she's offering paint-your-own-pottery kits for children unable to attend in-person classes. Classes will resume once COVID-19 safety measures allow.
Supporting the Community
Deeply connected to Lake Charles and surrounding areas, Roberie is launching a hurricane relief fund. Shelby Roberie Ceramics will donate all proceeds from her handmade prayer bowls to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). She's crafted about 100 bowls already and plans to make more—a perfect way to own a unique ceramic piece while aiding recovery.
Celebrating Local Roots
Roberie opened her shop in her hometown of Welsh to bolster the local economy. Her signature designs draw inspiration from neighbors' gardens and feature Louisiana-themed items like necklaces shaped like the state with a heart over Lake Charles, fleur-de-lis motifs, and magnolia patterns honoring the state flower.
