Polaroid of the Week: El Ateneo Grand Splendid – Buenos Aires' Most Beautiful Bookstore

Polaroid of the Week: El Ateneo Grand Splendid – Buenos Aires Most Beautiful BookstoreOriginally opened as the Teatro Gran Splendid theater in 1919, this iconic Buenos Aires landmark is now home to what many call the world's most beautiful bookstore. It began as a grand theater, transitioned to a cinema in the 1930s, then closed and stood empty for decades.

In 2000, the Ateneo bookstore chain acquired the property and meticulously renovated the historic venue into its flagship store in the city. Theater seats gave way to towering bookshelves, while the opulent interior—complete with theater boxes, red carpets, and ornate details—remains preserved.

The former stage now hosts a cozy café where visitors can sip café con leche, read, and gaze out at book lovers browsing the shelves. At night, musicians perform traditional Argentine tunes on pianos or accordions, entertaining readers in the balcony boxes. Seated at a small table on stage, we once enjoyed a passionate accordion performance, evoking the magic of actors performing here nearly a century ago amid this stunning hall.

It's no surprise that El Ateneo Grand Splendid has evolved far beyond a mere bookstore. Today, it draws over 1 million visitors annually, who marvel at its architectural splendor, intricate carvings, stage curtains, and painted ceiling—a testament to its grand theatrical past.

In the adjacent courtyard, I spotted an impressive 40-foot (12m) bronze sculpture: the Peace Fountain, created by artist Greg Wyatt in 1985. This whimsical, bizarre ma

San Franciscos Chinatown is one of the largest outside Asia. The Sing Chong Building (shown in the photo) was among the first structures rebuilt after the devastating 1906 earthquake.

  • Polaroid of the Week: Breathtaking Beach Sunset in Montañita, Ecuador

After a week in the hot, humid confines of Guayaquil, I eagerly headed to the coast for refreshing ocean breezes. Montañita, a vibrant village on Ecuadors Santa Elena Peninsula along the Pacific Coast, is renowned as the countrys premier surf destination. Upon arrival, I discovered its also a major party hub attracting revelers from across South America—think Ibizas energy, but with pulsating music from beachfront discos rather than massive clubs. However, I wasnt in the party mood. Safety co
