Polaroid of the Week: Discovering a Hidden Book Sculpture in Manhattan's Peace Fountain
Last week, I uncovered a true hidden gem in New York City—one worthy of any list of under-the-radar spots that most visitors and locals overlook. I finally visited the magnificent Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights on the Upper West Side—the world's fourth-largest Christian cathedral and a must-see destination. In the adjacent courtyard, I spotted an impressive 40-foot (12m) bronze sculpture: the Peace Fountain, created by artist Greg Wyatt in 1985. This whimsical, bizarre masterpiece features a giant crab, the decapitated head of Satan, giraffes, and more.
Surrounding the fountain are smaller bronze statues depicting animals, icons like Gandhi and Einstein, and books partially overgrown with ivy. They illustrate fairy tales and famous quotes, forming an enchanting wonderland brimming with intricate details to discover. I've returned twice already to soak in the garden, escape the bustle of Amsterdam Avenue (near my NYC home), and find moments of tranquility. This lush green oasis in Upper Manhattan is irresistible—expect to see me there again with coffee and a book.
The Cathedral is at the corner of West 110th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Visit this quirky garden yourself!
