Off-Roading in Southwest Virginia: Your Guide to the Spearhead ATV Trails

Southwest Virginia is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, boasting scenic mountains and charming small towns perfect for hiking, camping, mountain biking, and fishing. Now, adventure seekers powered by ATVs can discover an expansive network of off-road trails designed for thrilling exploration.

The Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia offer ideal terrain to challenge rugged off-road vehicles. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned rider, the Spearhead Trails System provides diverse options across more than 300 miles of trails in five interconnected groupings. Trails are rated like ski runs for safety and suitability. A single permit grants access to all, complemented by ATV-friendly lodging, rentals, guides, and vehicle support.

Spearhead Trails

Each of the five trail systems offers unique experiences, all within close proximity for multi-trail adventures. Here's an overview:

Coal Canyon: Near Poplar Gap Park in Buchanan County, this 61-mile system suits ATVs and side-by-sides. Expansion plans aim for 100 miles from Grundy to Haysi. Family-friendly paths on reclaimed mining land deliver ridge-top views of mountains and valleys, accommodating all skill levels.

Mountain View: Over 100 miles of tree-lined trails, including 10 miles of singletrack for dirt bikes. Predominantly difficult ratings challenge skilled riders. The trailhead in ATV-friendly St. Paul allows street-legal riding in town.

Original Pocahontas: Near historic Pocahontas in Tazewell County, enjoy 65 miles of 'deep woods' trails with stunning vistas. Accessible from Pocahontas (ATV-friendly) and Boissevain Park. Explore mining history at the Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine and Museum.

Ridgeview Trail System: Opened in 2017, 60 miles total—50 multi-use and 10 singletrack—connect to Haysi, Virginia. Future expansions link to Breaks Interstate Park for bikers and equestrians. Mostly easy to moderate, ideal for beginners with challenging sections.

Stone Mountain: The smallest at 30 miles in Pennington Gap, primarily intermediate to advanced for aggressive riders. Nine overlooks offer panoramic views of Stone and Black Mountains, with rest areas and picnic tables. Trailhead at amenity-rich Leeman Park, featuring RV camping, pool, courts, and picnic areas.

Planning Your Trip

Region-wide campgrounds, hotels, B&Bs, and cabins abound, but ATV-specific lodging enhances convenience.

Southern Gap Outdoor Adventures at the Coal Canyon trailhead offers tent/RV camping and cabins sleeping 7-10. Rent side-by-side ATVs and hire guides. Spot reintroduced elk via bus tours in Buchanan County.

Real McCoy Cabins in Pocahontas provides six rustic luxury units off the Original Pocahontas trails, sleeping 4-6 with heat, A/C, and kitchenettes. Onsite meals available; ride to town for dining or fuel.

Trailhead ATV Resort in Boissevain near Original Pocahontas offers cabins, cottages, RV/tent sites with modern amenities, including deluxe cabins for 6-7 and a camp store.

No vehicle? Spearhead Trails Rentals and Tours in Coeburn outfits you fully. St. Paul ATV Excursions provides guided tours.

A required trail permit is available at local retailers or online. The Spearhead system has swiftly become a top Eastern U.S. ATV destination—get ready for mud and excitement.
