Confirm leash requirements in advance—some areas mandate leashes, while others allow off-leash play. Always pack a long leash. If off-leash is permitted, maintain voice control to prevent wandering. Be courteous to other beachgoers, especially families with children. Never leave your dog unattended, and stay vigilant for distractions. Respect all posted rules, pack out waste, and bring water, poop bags, and a leash. Help preserve these spots for future visits.

Virginia State Park Regulations

Pets are welcome in all Virginia State Parks but must be leashed (max 6 feet) and under control, except in designated swim areas where they are prohibited.

Designated "swimming beaches" ban dogs entirely. Non-swimming shorelines, especially rivers in Tidewater parks, often allow dog swimming. In rivers and large lakes, dogs may enter water from shorelines but must leash up upon returning to land.
