Ultimate Guide to Hiking Wadis and Waterfalls Along Jordan's Dead Sea Coast
The Dead Sea's iconic images feature visitors floating effortlessly with newspapers in hand amid gentle waves. Yet, for adrenaline seekers, thrilling adventures await just inland: cascading waterfalls, river-carved wadis (valleys and canyons), and immersive nature escapes far from the serene shores.
Lace up your hiking boots, pack plenty of water and a lunch, and head along the Dead Sea Highway. Beyond the shimmering blue waters lies a world of discovery.

Wadi Weida’a Waterfall
This beginner-friendly 6km round-trip hike follows a gentle stream past a local soaking tub, culminating at a waterfall blocked by fallen boulders. Palm trees and ferns line the trail for a refreshing nature walk suitable for all levels. Access via an unmarked turnoff 6km toward Karak, about 60.5km south of Sweimeh.
Wadi Zarqa Ma’in
Prepare to get wet on this 3.5km canyon trek, wading through the river beneath towering walls. Reward yourself with swims in natural pools and waterfalls amid ferns and palms clinging to cliffs. Local families add to the vibrant atmosphere. Find the trailhead by the cluster of cars near a small bridge, 12km south of Sweimeh—near a popular free public beach.

Wadi Himara
Sun-scorched rocks create a dramatic landscape in Wadi Himara's lower sections, softened by wildlife and desert blooms. The 4km ascent invites side-canyon detours and selfie spots, ending at a revitalizing waterfall. Park 8.5km south of Sweimeh and retrace your steps.

Wadi Numeira Siq
This hike transforms from a broad, sometimes polluted wadi into a dramatic siq with sheer walls and striated rocks filtering slivers of sky. After 9km, it opens to a pristine green valley ideal for camping. Athletic hikers will navigate boulder falls and climbs, but the untouched beauty rewards the effort. Dirt road access 68km south of Sweimeh, before the salt statue.

Wadi Mujib Siq
Wade knee-deep rivers under color-shifting canyon walls on this under-2km adventure. Navigate rope bridges, swift crossings, and rock climbs to a roaring waterfall. Timed right, watch Wild Jordan guided rappels (JD31). Entry limited (JD21); managed by Wild Jordan—arrive early. Nearby Wadi Mujib Chalets offer simple stays with epic Dead Sea views. Located 29.5km south of Sweimeh, north of the suspension bridge.

Getting There
JETT buses from Amman reach Sweimeh, hub of Dead Sea hotels. No public transport to trailheads—rent a car in Amman for flexibility, ideal for extending to Petra, Wadi Rum, or back to Amman.
Where to Eat and Sleep
Sweimeh offers international resorts. Day trips from Amman or Madaba work, but camping near trailheads enhances the experience. Stock up on basics in roadside villages: canned goods, falafel, even roast chicken.
