Top 10 Must-See Attractions and Activities on California's Central Coast – Insider Local Tips
Discover the best things to do on California's Central Coast, focusing on SLO County. Our curated list features top attractions and experiences, drawn from personal road trips and local insights.
Reflecting on our recent road trip, the highlights were endless. While we previously shared a San Luis Obispo travel guide, it didn't cover all our adventures or our charming stay in Cambria. Here, we present the top 10 things to see and do in this stunning region.

J. Patrick House Bed & Breakfast in Cambria
Finding the right accommodation is key amid the area's quaint towns. Our stay at J. Patrick House Bed & Breakfast in Cambria stood out as our first California B&B experience. It offered serene relaxation with a true "home away from home" vibe.
Owner Linda hosts daily happy hours with hors d'oeuvres and unlimited local wines, fresh-baked evening cookies, and hearty breakfasts. We enjoyed mingling with fellow guests and embracing this authentic coastal travel style.

Kayaking in San Simeon
Sea kayaking provides an immersive ocean adventure. We joined Sea for Yourself Kayak Outfitters for a tour of San Simeon Cove in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the nation's largest protected marine area, teeming with wildlife.
Highlights included a resting sea otter, baby elephant seal, harbor seals, bird nests, caves, and a mini blowhole. Whales with calves often pass through, making sightings common.
Helicopter Tour
Helicopter tours are limited on the Central Coast, but Channel Islands Helicopter Tours delivers exceptional options over Ventura's coast, whale watching, and Channel Islands flights. Prices start at $189 for two, offering great value.

Shell Beach
Nestled in Pismo Beach city limits, Shell Beach evokes a secluded coastal gem. Its stunning rock formations, Dinosaur Caves, make it one of the area's prettiest stretches. Ideal for launching kayaks or SUPs, with rentals and guided sea cave tours nearby.

Watch a Sunset at Pismo Beach
This expansive 60-acre beach rarely feels crowded, with ample space. Prime sunset viewing spots flank the pier, where surfers often deliver thrilling performances, including pier shoots.

Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery
Elephant seals captivate from afar at this rookery, 7 miles north of San Simeon on Highway 1. Open year-round, peak viewing avoids March, August-September, and October.

Big Sur Coast Highway
Highway 1 through Big Sur remains an iconic, ever-thrilling drive. Though GPS estimates 2 hours, allocate a full day for lookouts and hikes.

World-Famous Jalama Burger
Jalama Beach in remote Lompoc is a hidden treasure. Don't miss the legendary Jalama burger, best enjoyed with ocean views on calmer days.
Biplane Flight
Experience vintage thrill with Banner Airways' biplane tours from Oceano Airport, spanning Oceano Dunes to Avila Beach. Seats two plus pilot; optional barrel rolls available for extra excitement.

Hearst Castle
No Central Coast list omits this historic landmark. Tours cost $25 and are highly recommended, with potential zebra sightings on the grounds and even reindeer.
