Ultimate Da Lat Guide: Top Things to See, Do, and Eat from an Experienced Traveler
When planning my Vietnam itinerary, I debated including Da Lat—a 100 km inland detour into the Central Highlands from the coastal route. The 300 km journey from Ho Chi Minh City takes about 7 hours by bus. But stories of lush mountains, cooler evenings, and the iconic Crazy House convinced me. I'm thrilled I went!
Da Lat provided refreshing relief from coastal heat (days are still warm, but evenings are jacket weather). My guidebook offered limited insights, with most tourists fixating on the Crazy House. I uncovered diverse highlights for all travelers—from mountain motorbike tours to Harry Potter cafés.

The Best Things to See, Do, and Eat in Da Lat
Visit the Crazy House in Da Lat
The Crazy House was my top draw, and it exceeded expectations. Architecture enthusiasts, especially fans of Gaudí's surrealism, will adore it. Designed by architect Dang Viet Nga, this ongoing life project began as her home and now welcomes visitors. The centerpiece is a five-story banyan tree-like structure, with added buildings like rentable cabins. Now in her 80s, Nga continues expanding the complex.
Officially Hang Nga Guesthouse (named after the Chinese moon goddess), it features rentable rooms I regret skipping. Explore fantastical buildings with abstract shapes, winding stairs, stalagmites, vines, sculptures, and themed rooms—like an underwater world or Alice in Wonderland garden with giant mushrooms.
I spent over two hours wandering rooms, rooftops, and hidden nooks in this fairytale wonderland.
Staying at the Crazy House: Ten unique animal-themed rooms (bear, tiger, ant, kangaroo, termite). Book via Booking.com to preview photos. Rates start at US$45 including breakfast—a steal for this one-of-a-kind stay. Note: Open to public 8:30am–7pm, so expect tourists.
Visit Details: 03 Huynh Thuc Khang, 8:30am–7pm. Entry: VND60,000 (US$2.57). Allow 2 hours for details.
Tip: Arrive at opening or late afternoon to avoid tour groups.
Dress as Harry Potter at Coffee Harry Potter Da Lat
This Hogwarts-inspired spot caught my eye during research. Even as a casual fan, I loved it—Potterheads will be enchanted. Resembling the Great Hall with long tables, Sorting Hat, house photo ops, uniforms (rent for VND20,000/US$0.85), Quidditch field, Ollivander’s wand shop, and themed drinks like butterbeer or love potions.
It's 10 minutes by Grab/taxi from center (hour walk). Address: 23 Ngô Văn Sở, Phường 9, Tp. Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam.
Join a Pub Crawl in Da Lat
Kim Cuong Hostel's pub crawl introduced me to Da Lat's vibrant bars. Standouts: Fog Bar (hip-hop with laughing gas) and Maze Bar, echoing the city's quirky vibe. Maze Bar entry VND55,000 (US$2.37) includes a drink—navigate multi-floor mazes with bizarre sculptures, dead-end stairs, and oversized vases.
Kim Cuong Hostel: 191 Đường Bùi Thị Xuân—check for crawls.
Conquer Maze Bar (100 Roofs Bar)
Even sans crawl, visit for drinks or rooftop views. Open 24/7; easily 2 hours exploring. Address: 57 Phan Boi Chau.
Take an Easy Rider Motorbike Tour
Popular since the 1990s, Easy Rider tours let you passenger on scenic rides (no heavy bike handling). Da Lat's highlands are ideal. My full-day tour: temple, flower/coffee/silkworm plantations, weasel coffee farm (like Kopi Luwak, world's priciest), Linh An Pagoda (Laughing Buddha), Elephant Waterfalls, meals.

US$30+ (plus snacks); worth it for inaccessible spots. Book via hostel/online; customizable (e.g., more waterfalls). Skip Crazy House here—dedicate separate time.

Tip: Multi-day options to Mui Ne/Nha Trang/Saigon; some let you ride.
Try Avocado Ice Cream (Kem Bơ)
Da Lat's signature Kem Bơ—avocado mousse with coconut ice cream—is a must, despite lines. Delicious like avocado coffee!
- Kem bơ Thanh Thảo (76 Nguyễn Văn Trỗi)
- Nari Avocado Cream (74c Nguyễn Văn Trỗi)
VND30,000 (US$1.29). Also at night market.
Photo Ops with Teddy Bears at Lam Vien Square
Next to Xuan Huong Lake: futuristic sunflower stage and flower-bud café. VND681 billion project (2009–2015). Bustling with vendors, musicians, teddy bear costumes for pics. Prime people-watching; Doha Cafe upstairs for views.

Explore French Colonial Villas
French Indochina era hill station for elite escapes. Best-preserved along Tran Hung Dao (French Quarter on Google Maps, to Lam Dong Museum—VND15,000/US$0.65 for history).
Da Lat's Best Coffee Shops
Coffee haven with third-wave spots and more.

The Windmills: Cozy upstairs balcony. 7a Ba Tháng Hai.
