Best Dog-Friendly Hiking and Trail Running Spots Near Chattanooga
A Local Runner's Tale: A Chattanooga woman paused at an Atlanta intersection when a runner asked her to hold his dog's leash while he tied his shoes. He dashed off around the corner, leaving her with the patient pup. While dogs don't talk, this story highlights their love for trails over city streets.
Dogs thrive on trails for the same reasons we do: softer surfaces, no traffic, and diverse terrain that sparks adventure. The Chattanooga area offers excellent options for you and your canine companion.
Start with the Guild Hardy Trail on Lookout Mountain, accessible from Ochs Highway, Ruby Falls, or Cravens House. This former 1880s railroad bed provides a wide, gently graded path. For more challenge, connect to steeper singletrack loops. "I love running with my dog on the Guild, Gum Springs, and Rifle Pits trails on Lookout," says local runner Cynthia Fallowfield.
Water can be limited on Lookout, so pack extra for your dog, especially in summer. Dogs cool by panting, not sweating, so use water breaks to check their well-being.
Trails with water sources are dog favorites. Blane Andrews praises paths near Cravens House for short or long runs, followed by swims at Glen Falls. "The dogs and I prefer spots with natural water," Andrews says. North Chick Gorge is another hit. "Willow skips the busy Blue Hole for quieter watering holes farther in," he adds.
"The Cumberland Trail is ideal for dogs—no mountain bikes or crowds," notes ultrarunner Dreama Campbell. Her dog Hank enjoys the Rock Creek and Soddy Gorge sections, but prefers the rugged Possum Creek with its abundant creeks. Other gems include Savage Gulf, Foster Falls, and the 10-mile Mullens Cove Loop in Prentice Cooper.
Runner Joe Klein agrees: "Prentice Cooper is great due to low foot traffic."
Crystal Lee Watson runs with her dog Harper at White Oak Mountain in Collegedale, Enterprise South, and Lookout Mountain. "White Oak is my top pick—plenty of paths to avoid bikers, plus streams for cooling off and drinking," she says.

Chattanooga's trails offer endless options for dogs and owners, backed by local expertise.
These recommendations draw from experienced runners in the area, ensuring reliable, enjoyable outings.
Leash Tip: Always carry a leash. Many trails require it by regulation or for safety around people, wildlife, and roads.
