Discover Hands-On Culinary Classes at Horry-Georgetown Technical College's International Culinary Institute
I've attended two engaging cooking classes at Horry-Georgetown Technical College's stunning International Culinary Institute (ICI) in recent months, gaining practical skills for new dishes and fresh twists on classics to recreate at home. Nestled near The Market Common in Myrtle Beach, this modern facility is a hidden gem for visitors seeking authentic culinary experiences.
The ICI's continuing education courses are open to the public, typically held evenings or weekends, and priced affordably at around $79—offering a full meal plus leftovers. I participated in a shrimp and grits demonstration and a Latin American Cuisine class. Other options include Best Italian Desserts, Caribbean BBQ, Fresh Homemade Pasta, Grilling at the Barbecue Pit, Paella and More, Cake Rolls, Youth Taco Truck, and more.
Class formats vary by topic, but typically begin with a chef-led demonstration. Participants then divide into small groups to prepare one course each. In the Latin American class, our four groups handled four courses, with the chef and assistants providing guidance to all skill levels—from beginners to seasoned pros.
Once prepared, the 16-person class dines together, fostering camaraderie. Classes run about 3 hours and include a completion certificate. Food enthusiasts will find these sessions rewarding and enjoyable.
Key tips: Classes are small and book quickly—register early via the online schedule. Enrollment is straightforward, with email confirmations including details on location and attire. Pairing up with a friend or partner enhances the fun, making it an ideal date-night alternative.
