Beyond the Beach: Hands-On Pottery Classes at Myrtle Beach Art Museum
This past Valentine’s Day, instead of our usual fancy dinner out, my husband and I enrolled in a couples’ pottery class at the newly opened Lineta Pritchard Pottery Studio. Located downstairs at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach—commonly known as the Myrtle Beach Art Museum—this studio offers diverse classes for all skill levels.
We joined two other couples, all beginners, for a refreshing change from typical date nights. Creating pottery together fostered a collaborative, enjoyable group experience. The studio features six pottery wheels, hand-building areas, glazing and cleaning stations, and a kiln room. Our group of six received personalized guidance from two expert instructors on wheel-throwing bowls—a skill more challenging than it appears, but made accessible with step-by-step instruction.
Each participant crafted two unique bowl-style pieces and selected glaze colors. Instructor Arielle handled the final glazing and firing, with pieces ready for pickup soon after. The atmosphere was vibrant, with music, light snacks, and our shared bottle of wine. While couples’ classes aren’t currently listed, more are planned—contact the museum to arrange a one-time group session like ours.
Scheduled options include three-week sessions (twice weekly) and six-week sessions (once weekly), ideal for longer visitor stays during shoulder seasons. Non-member pricing is $250 per session. Our couples’ class cost $60 per couple—a great value for the comprehensive experience provided.
The Myrtle Beach Art Museum excels in children’s programs upstairs, but pottery classes are for ages 16+. For those unable to return for pickup, instructors may arrange shipping. The personalized attention sets this venue apart, making it a must-visit for Myrtle Beach vacations—whether for pottery or the latest exhibits.
