Fishtrap Lake Wildlife Management Area – Scenic Outdoor Recreation in Eastern Kentucky
Location:
KY 460, Pikeville, KY 41501
Developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fishtrap Lake is held by the highest dam in Eastern Kentucky. During the peak recreation season, the reservoir stretches 16.5 mi and covers 1,131 acres. Visitors enjoy scenic vistas, boating, water‑skiing, hiking, fishing, camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. State‑regulated hunting is also permitted.
As a recent addition to the Kentucky State Parks system, Fishtrap Lake State Park was originally conceived to mitigate flooding along the Big Sandy River. The Corps completed the project in six years—from groundbreaking in 1962 to its dedication by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. The park opened to the public in 2003.
Hunting, Fishing and More
Fishtrap Lake offers a diverse array of activities for both casual and seasoned outdoors enthusiasts. During hunting season, visitors encounter plentiful white‑tailed deer, fall turkey, and other game. The park follows statewide hunting regulations, which are outlined on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website.
