Coney Island Mermaid Parade: Vibrant Polaroids from the 32nd Annual Spectacle
Last spring, while housesitting in New York, I was disappointed to miss Coney Island's iconic Mermaid Parade by just a few days, as we headed to Germany right before the event. This year, I was thrilled to be back in NYC for its 32nd edition on Brooklyn's southern boardwalk.
Founded in 1983, the parade celebrates local mythology—think street names like Neptune and Mermaid—while giving New Yorkers artistic freedom to express themselves through bold, imaginative costumes. Though many draw from mermaid and ocean themes, participants can wear anything (or as little) they like. Open to all, it features families, couples, seniors, babies, friends, and marching bands—a true cross-section of NYC's creative community. Many spend months crafting handmade outfits, and I'll showcase standout designs in a full photo feature next week, including mermaids, sailors, Transformers, Lady Gaga impersonators, dragons, and more. This is just a teaser!
The Mermaid Parade exceeded all expectations. If you're in New York mid-to-late June, it's a must-see celebration of creativity and community.
