Bumpy Roads and Village Stops: Our Authentic Two-Day Bus Journey from Muang Sing to Nong Khiaw, Laos

They say travel is about the journey, not the destination.

In a recent Reflections post, we shared our passion for the real challenges of local bus travel. Here, we invite you along on our firsthand experience traveling from remote Muang Sing in northern Laos—near the Chinese border—to the stunning riverside town of Nong Khiaw.

Day 1: Muang Sing to Nong Khiaw… We Hope!

6:45 AM: Alarm wakes us in our serene bungalow amid the quiet village of Muang Sing.

7:10 AM: Packed and ready, we head to the hotel restaurant for included breakfast: coffee, baguette, and scrambled eggs—simple but satisfying.

8:20 AM: We trek to the bus station with heavy packs. The bus departs at 9:30 AM, but we have time to spare.

8:40 AM: We arrive and snag the last two seats—fortunate, as others sit on rice sacks for hours.

9:15 AM: The bus overflows: mothers with babies on rice sacks in the aisle, all seats full, roof loaded with boxes, bags, baskets, fruit, and rice.

9:30 AM: Remarkably, we depart on time, bouncing over dusty roads toward Luang Nam Tha, our first transfer point.

9:40 AM: Nausea sets in just 10 minutes later on these familiar winding mountain roads.

10:30 AM: Narrow dirt-and-gravel roads hug steep mountainsides, dodging massive potholes that could cause flats—but we press on.

10:45 AM: Brief stop to drop mothers in a remote village: bamboo huts, naked children, dogs, pigs, and cats everywhere.

11:25 AM: More drop-offs delay us; the driver climbs to the roof repeatedly. Our connecting bus to Udomxai leaves soon from another station.

11:30 AM: We reach the in-town station; a songthaew awaits to shuttle us 8km to the main terminal for 10,000 kip ($1.25).

12:10 PM: Tickets secured. The 'main' station is basic: shacks selling chips and fruit. We forage for food.

12:15 PM: An apple and bag of tangerines suffice; the dusty baguette stand looks unappealing.

12:30 PM: Boarding our proper bus early, we claim good seats for the long haul.
