Polaroid of the Week: Serene Beach Strolls with Friendly Hostel Dogs in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay

Spring has officially arrived in the northern hemisphere, bringing autumn chills south of the equator. To catch the last of Uruguay's beach season, we headed to Punta del Diablo, a charming bohemian beach town near the Brazilian border.

Despite occasional rain and ocean waters too cold for swimming (though locals braved it), sunny spells perfect for strolling miles of empty beaches abounded. Our stay at Hostel De La Viuda included a pack of friendly dogs who joined our walks with enthusiasm.

These pups eased our longing for our two furry Santiago friends from a recent housesit. They adopted us instantly, accompanying daily beach treks, 'guarding' us from rival dogs (pure jealousy!), and greeting us at our door each morning. Our favorite, the massive yet graceful mutt 'Novio' (boyfriend), even escorted us five blocks to the bus stop in the rain, waiting stoically as we left for La Paloma. We miss them dearly!

How far would you go for a day on a 7km stretch of nearly deserted white-sand beach? After searching in Thailand and nearly finding it in Malaysia, we discovered our ideal Southeast Asian beach in Cambodia: endless white sands, ankle-deep crystal-clear waters 100 feet offshore, and hardly a soul around. This gem is on Koh Rong, a small island two hours off Cambodias coast. Reaching it demands a one-hour semi-strenuous hike in intense April heat, culminating in a 75-meter near-vertical scramble u
