Mismaloya: Hollywood’s Golden Beach from 'The Night of the Iguana'

A small cove with a golden sand beach, surrounded by lush vegetation, was put in the 1963 world’s sights when Hollywood gave it huge publicity by making it the set for The Night of the Iguana, John Houston’ s film adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ homonymous play.

On Mismaloya beach the set of the Richard Burton’s starring film was installed, who at that time had started a notorious romance with actress Elizabeth Taylor.

20 kilometers away from Puerto Vallarta, 250-meters-fine-sand beach Mismaloya is a perfect family relaxing destination. You can swim in its quiet waters, paddle a kayak, try paddle boarding, eat seafood in the sea view restaurants or explore The Night of the Iguana’s movie set. You can also go on excursions to the islets that make up Parque Nacional Los Arcos (Los Arcos National Park) or visit El Edén park where Arnold Schwarzenegger’ starring film Predator was filmed, or go up to the viewpoint to see unforgettable sunsets.

In addition, from there it’s possible to organize small excursions to Yelapa, Quimixto and Las Ánimas nearby beaches.

The younger kids cheered with excitement, while the older ones looked up in

  • Polaroid of the Week: Breathtaking Beach Sunset in Montañita, Ecuador

After a week in the hot, humid confines of Guayaquil, I eagerly headed to the coast for refreshing ocean breezes. Montañita, a vibrant village on Ecuadors Santa Elena Peninsula along the Pacific Coast, is renowned as the countrys premier surf destination. Upon arrival, I discovered its also a major party hub attracting revelers from across South America—think Ibizas energy, but with pulsating music from beachfront discos rather than massive clubs. However, I wasnt in the party mood. Safety co
