Spontaneous Family Beach Adventure on the Creole Nature Trail
It was a typical lazy Saturday at home, with everyone lounging after breakfast. After indulging in blueberry muffins and coffee, I noticed our six children glued to phones, iPads, and the TV—some even tethered to chargers. Their energy seemed stagnant. I turned to my husband and said, "We need to get the kids outside! It's a beautiful day—let's head to the beach!"

We announced the plan: time to unplug and go to the beach! The younger kids cheered with excitement, while the older ones looked up in surprise before joining in. Chaos ensued as everyone grabbed beach bags, flip-flops, sunglasses, hair ties (for our five girls and one boy), and essentials. I quickly inventoried our sunscreen supply—essential for our large family.
In the kitchen, I packed oranges, water, and granola bars. We dashed out the door in a flurry of enthusiasm. In hindsight, an ice chest with more snacks would have been ideal, but spontaneity struck fast! The drive along the scenic Creole Nature Trail All-American Road was invigorating. I drove the minivan with the younger kids, windows down, hair whipping in the breeze, while my husband led in the other vehicle with the teens. (We need two cars for our crew.)

Louisiana's Gulf beaches feature natural sand and shell shores, perfect for shelling. With the tide coming in, we waded through shallow waters to the first sandbar, where tiny silver fish nibbled at our ankles. My youngest spotted a hermit crab, sparking childhood memories.

The sun, sand, salty air, and sea breeze energized us all. We etched names in the sand with sticks and toes, built shell collections (holding conch shells to hear the ocean's whisper), and watched shorebirds at play. Laughter filled the air as we created enriching, lasting family memories.
