Knowing more about MexicoKnown for its beautiful beaches and spectacular swimming spots, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is a twice-as-nice destination for a weekend trip away. All that’s left to do is to prepare yourself for a great time, and to explore its surroundings.
How to get to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo? This destination, in the state of Guerrero, can be reached by road, as it is located in the north-west part of the state, just over four hours from Acapulco. You can stop for a break somewhere along the green landscape of Sierra Madre del Sur, which spans just under 7 miles (11km) of scenic coastline, with soft-sand beaches, lagoons, rocky mountains, and small islands.
The first thing you should do is choosing a hotel in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo’s zona hotelera (hotel zone), where you can find large modern constructions, or colonial-coastal-style buildings with stunning gardens; there are all kinds of options for all different tastes.
What to visit in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo?Once you’re settled in, put on something comfortable, and go for a run or walk along the beautiful, soft-sand beaches, admiring the wonderful view offered by the bay.
You can stay on the beach, rent a palapa, and have a relaxing day. If you prefer to go walking, we recommend heading to the center of Zihuatanejo to visit the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande (the Costa Grande Archaeological Museum), which preserves great cultural heritage.
The museum has six exhibition rooms, where you can find different archaeological artifacts, as well as the history of how this destination was developed. As you walk through each room you’ll come across objects belonging to Teotihuacán culture, from the classical period in 200-650 A.D. There is also an exhibition of Costa Grande first inhabitants, with paintings and canvases made by local artists.
The ideal way to spend the evening is by walking the entire length of the bay and admiring the sunset from a palapa or a hotel rooftop in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, accompanied by good music and your favorite dishes.
If you are planning a trip to this destination, it’s important to note that the weather is warm for most of the year-the best time to visit therefore, is up to you.
