Algodones, Mexico: A Safer Alternative to Tijuana for Dental Care, Prescriptions, and Affordable Adventures

Discover Algodones: Mexico's Premier Border Town for Savvy Travelers

With Tijuana's safety concerns for tourists, Algodones has emerged as a reliable alternative for a quick, secure Mexico getaway from Yuma, Arizona.

Known as "Molar City," this compact four-block town boasts more pharmacies, dentists, and opticians per square foot than anywhere else. It's not a nightlife hotspot like Tijuana, but it's ideal for affordable dental work, prescription savings, vibrant Mexican crafts, and authentic cuisine. Snowbirds from the U.S. and Canada flock here during winter.

Many dentists are U.S.-trained and reside stateside, ensuring high standards. From Yuma, park on the U.S. side—entry into Mexico is hassle-free, with minimal security checks.

On our visit with family, locals greeted us warmly, though vendors enthusiastically pitch souvenirs like colorful blankets and trinkets. One memorable line: "Lady, add this purse to your collection!"

The culinary highlight? Fresh Mexican meals rivaling San Diego's scene but at unbeatable prices. Dine like royalty for $10 per person at local restaurants, or grab $1.50 shrimp tacos from street vendors.

Alexandra's salon offered a full wash, cut, dry, and style for just $7 (men's cut: $6)—cheaper than many U.S. options, even on weekdays.

At the pharmacy, stock up legally on a 90-day supply of non-controlled medications for U.S. re-entry. A bottle of Mucinex costs $6 here versus $30+ stateside. No prescriptions for opiates or controlled substances.

Dental procedures that run $3,000 uninsured in the U.S. often cost under $500 here—another reason Algodones shines for practical travelers.

  • PacWesty: Rising Star in Pacific Northwest VW Camper Van Adventures

Not even a year old, PacWesty is already taking the Pacific Northwest by storm. Headquartered a 35-minute ferry ride west of Seattle, this Bainbridge Island company specializes in getting visitors (and locals!) out to the Olympic Peninsula—more specifically, getting travelers out in fully equipped VW camper vans. Even more exciting, the company is working on converting one of their vans to be electric. As an Ecotourism major I’m sure you can only imagine how delighted I was to find out about
