Ali's Surf Camp Review: Authentic Surfing Experience in Cabarete, Dominican Republic

One of the highlights of our Christmas trip to the Dominican Republic was staying at Ali's Surf Camp in Cabarete. The friendly, welcoming staff created a vibrant atmosphere, but what truly stood out was how surf camp fosters genuine connections among guests.

Surf camp attracts outgoing, athletic adventurers who share a passion for riding waves. The communal meals and shared love of surfing naturally build camaraderie and lasting friendships.

This was our first extended stay at a surf camp with daily group dinners where everyone bonded effortlessly. We had a taste of this at Hoa's Place in Vietnam for one night—another spot with an incredible community vibe, wonderful owners, and nearby China Beach, one of Vietnam's premier surf spots.

Scott raved about an off-the-grid surf camp in northern Peru a few years back, and I'm eager to visit it someday.

Ali's Surf Camp, also known as Cabarete Hostel and Cabarete Surf Camp, can be confusing due to its multiple names and websites. They may have merged from separate operations.

Accommodation options include budget bungalows with shared baths, private bath bungalows, and apartments. Ideal for cost-conscious travelers, bungalows start at $30 USD per night—comfortable but not luxurious.

Ali's Surf Camp sits at Playa Encuentro, a top Dominican Republic surf beach. The staff's attentiveness impressed us—they even waxed boards proactively, unlike some lazy outfits we've encountered.

Choose group or private lessons, or opt for board rentals at $20 USD per day per person, including twice-daily beach transport. High-quality boards in various sizes adapt to Encuentro's shifting conditions—a fantastic value.
