Dominican Republic Leads Caribbean Tourism Recovery During COVID-19: ForwardKeys Insights
By ForwardKeys, Feb. 10, 2021
Positive news in travel: The Dominican Republic is outperforming other Caribbean destinations in international arrivals amid COVID-19 challenges, according to ForwardKeys air ticketing data.
Dominican Republic's Strong Recovery
Recent air ticketing data shows the Dominican Republic emerging stronger from the pandemic compared to early 2020.

“The Dominican Republic exemplifies effective government handling of the COVID-19 crisis. This chart clearly illustrates peaks and troughs in international arrivals tied to policy announcements and safety measures,” says Olivier Ponti, VP of Insights at ForwardKeys.
Ponti adds: “Keeping borders open has been crucial. Like Mexico and other Caribbean spots, intra-regional travel surged as U.S. travelers sought escapes.”
Destination Marketing in the Pandemic Era
COVID-19 has disrupted global tourism beyond flight halts. Even with vaccines rolling out, volatility persists due to restrictions, quarantines, and reduced capacity, shifting traveler booking behaviors.
“In 2020, average lead times were 120 days overall, dropping to 2019 levels of 72 days by December,” notes Juan Gomez, Senior Analyst at ForwardKeys.
For destination marketing, Danny Callaghan, CEO of LATA, emphasizes: “Rebuilding traveler confidence is paramount for tourism destinations.” He adds: “Consumer attitudes toward brands and destinations are evolving—tourism authorities must adapt to maximize recovery potential.”
Emerging Opportunities for Caribbean Tourism
ForwardKeys data reveals key U.S. city trends and a surprising shift in passenger types for the Dominican Republic.
With a strong U.S. market share—despite Europe's stricter rules—sun-seekers from the U.S. West Coast dominated. Top cities: New York, Miami, and Boston.

Leisure travelers led, comprising 73% of bookings in late 2020, followed by VFR at 18%, groups at 8%, and business at 2%.
A notable shift: Singles/solo travelers rose to over 35% market share in H2 2020, up 10% year-over-year, surpassing couples (30% in 2019).
ForwardKeys consulted the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. Liliana Cruz from the Intelligence Unit attributes this to remote work: “Teleworking enables beach or mountain offices. Our robust safety structure—including free COVID-19 insurance, international protocols, and health policies—positions us ideally.”

Minister of Tourism David Collado adds: “Solo travelers seek activities like hiking, kayaking, surfing, and wildlife viewing in our vast national parks and beaches. Our safe, welcoming environment, global hotel brands, and family-run properties foster connections.”
This case offers hope: Effective governance and tourism strategies drive progress amid adversity.
