Ultimate Adventure Guide to Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic: Paragliding, Rafting & Waterfalls

This article is in collaboration with Go Dominican Republic. All opinions are my own, based on firsthand experience.

Nestled in the heart of the Dominican Republic within the Central Mountain Range, Jarabacoa enjoys a tropical climate with mild temperatures year-round, earning it the nickname The City of Everlasting Spring. Surrounded by rivers, mountains, and lush jungle, it's an ideal destination for adventure seekers. From paragliding and whitewater rafting to hiking and waterfall swims, discover these exhilarating activities that showcase Jarabacoa's natural wonders.

Paragliding

Though initially nerve-wracking, paragliding in Jarabacoa proved surprisingly accessible—perfect if you're comfortable with ziplining. I highly recommend Flying Tony, who delivered an unforgettable tandem flight soaring above the valley, with stunning views of distant waterfalls.

Pro tip: Secure your phone or camera with a strap (I used one for my Canon 5D MK IV). For epic shots, opt for a GoPro on a selfie stick—check out Hailey Miller's stunning photo below.

Whitewater Rafting

As a seasoned rafter, I rank Jarabacoa's Yaque del Norte River among the world's best. Even with lower water levels, the rapids delivered big drops and guaranteed soaks. Rancho Baiguate provided an outstanding tour, complete with breakfast and dinner. Wear water shoes for comfort.

Hike Ébano Verde Scientific Reserve

This 8km one-way trail is mostly downhill but challenging due to mud and steep steps. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, pack water, and expect to get dirty—everyone in our group slipped at least once. Avoid rainy days unless you're experienced. The reward? Breathtaking jungle vistas and the refreshing natural pool at El Arroyazo—pack a swimsuit!

Note: Two entrances exist. The Casabito entrance (highest point on Carretera de Casabito) requires 4WD and pre-arranged access. The main entrance, near the Fernando Aquino Visitor Center, is after the second bridge at El Arroyazo. Book guided tours via Fundación Ébano Verde at the Fernando Domínguez Visitor Center.

Swim at a Waterfall

Home to the Caribbean's longest river, Yaque del Norte, Jarabacoa boasts prime waterfall spots like Salto Baiguate, Salto de Jimenoa I, and Jimenoa II. Hike down in proper shoes and swim in the base pools—pure bliss!

In our recent post, A former local’s guide to Antigua, Guatemala, we explored my return to Antigua after seven years away. A key theme was the growth and maturity of both the town and its business owners, including myself. This evolution extends to our Guatemala crew—friends who lived, worked, and bonded in Antigua since 2003. Nearly all have pursued careers making a positive global impact: from teachers and Spanish-speaking therapists to European criminal justice investigators and nurses volunt
