Island in the Sun: Adventures from Jarabacoa Mountains to Punta Rucia Beaches in the Dominican Republic
After seven unforgettable days, I was on the 5th floor of the Hodelpa Gran Almirante Hotel, savoring champagne in the VIP lounge. Despite my dirt-streaked shoes still damp from the previous day's river rafting, I felt perfectly at home. This chaotic blend of luxury and rugged adventure had become my reality—one night enveloped in five-star comfort with plush down pillows, the next under the stars in a tent or truck bed. The striking contrast between opulence and simplicity rarely finds balance, yet I was utterly captivated by it.
Though I was in bustling Santiago, my thoughts lingered on Paradise Island. I could still vividly recall somersaulting underwater, pursuing vibrant yellow fish through turquoise waters. This local gem, a sandy haven amid the sea, featured lush mangrove forests, a private lunch at Blue Island, and indulgent handmade whipped cream.

Reflecting on day one in the Dominican Republic, the tropical heat hit immediately upon landing. I shed my jacket, hoodie, and regretted my pants choice. Our group of ten—mostly first-time meetings but all seasoned adventurers—bonded instantly.

We cleared passport control and boarded two vans, winding upward into the island's interior. Jarabacoa, often called the 'Switzerland of the Dominican Republic,' welcomed us with its cool mountain air.
For three nights at the Hotel Gran Jimenoa, we savored local cuisine with stunning mountain vistas, hiked to waterfalls, and explored forested lagoons. First-time thrills included paragliding and river rafting. We trekked 8km on the Ébano Verde Trail, connecting deeply with local guides and residents who made us feel like family.

Heading north after three days in the lush mountains, we arrived in vibrant Punta Rucia at sunset. Pink hues faded into the sky as blue hour graced the sea. After a lively beachside dinner of pizza and beer, we settled into Paraiso Eco Lodge, eager for sunrise.

Dominican sunrises are magical—a dreamlike pastel glow enveloping the quiet shore, sand warmly embracing your feet. We enjoyed a traditional beach breakfast before boarding a speedboat, skimming over turquoise waters toward Paradise Island.

Back in Santiago at the Hodelpa lounge, freshly showered and reviewing photos, I caught one final Dominican sunset through the bay windows. I'll return without question.
