Roanoke Island
Island Farm
Escape the beach for a step back in time at Island Farm, a living history site rooted in the 1800s. Witness daily homestead life with oxen, sheep, chickens, reconstructed buildings, a working garden, and period-furnished home. Depending on your visit, see cider pressing or hearth baking.
Tip: On Tuesdays and Thursdays, meet wild ponies from the Outer Banks herd. Wednesdays feature kids' blacksmithing sessions to craft keepsakes.
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
Explore Roanoke Island's pivotal role in history: site of England's first American attempts in 1584–1587, the Lost Colony, a Freedmen's Colony during the Civil War, and Reginald Fessenden's radio experiments. Start at the Lindsay Warren Visitor Center.
Tip: Park and stroll under loblolly pines and oaks. Try the 1/3-mile Thomas Harriot Woods Trail to a secluded Roanoke Sound beach.
Elizabethan Gardens
Unwind in this 10.5-acre haven of blooms, herbs, shrubs, Renaissance statues, camellias, and ancient live oaks. Spot the Virginia Dare statue, born in 1587. Kids enjoy the play area, Butterfly House, trails, and Great Lawn.

Roanoke Island Festival Park
Cross the Manteo waterfront bridge to this 16th-century re-creation. Tour colonist homes, blacksmith and lathe shops, Algonkian camp, and the replica ship Elizabeth II. Inside, the Roanoke Adventure Museum offers interactive exhibits like pulley cargo hauling.

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
Admire this 1877 screwpile replica emitting a steady Fresnel lens beam. Nearby, the George Washington Creef Boathouse showcases early fishing, boatbuilding, and the historic shad boat Ella View, North Carolina's state watercraft.
Pea Island Cookhouse Museum at Collins Park
Honor the all-Black Pea Island Life-Saving Station (now US Coast Guard), led by Richard Etheridge, a former slave from Island Farm. View the restored cookhouse, rescue boat, and Etheridge statue. Inquire about special programs with Manteo town.
North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Book timed entry online. Marvel at river otters, snapping turtles, white alligator, stingray touch tank, sand tiger sharks in the Graveyard of the Atlantic exhibit, turtle hospital, and jellyfish room. See the sea turtle rehab center.

Roanoke Island Maritime Museum
Housed in the George Washington Creef Boathouse on Manteo waterfront, this 1998 museum highlights maritime heritage. Exhibits include the 1883 shad boat Ella, clipper yawl, hydroplane. Hatteras Island
Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station
One of America's few preserved US Life-Saving Service sites (predecessor to Coast Guard). Tour 1874 and 1908 buildings, period home, and watch breeches buoy demos (call ahead). See restored Surfboat 1046 from a WWI rescue amid fuel fires.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum
Celebrate OBX maritime history: shipwrecks, Blackbeard piracy, charter fishing origins, Hatteras fishing heritage. View Cape Hatteras lens, U-boat artifacts. Note nearby Hotel de Afrique marker and 1861 Fort Hatteras battle.
Northern Beaches
Wright Brothers National Memorial
Site of the Wright brothers' 1903 first flight (NC: "First in Flight"). Climb Big Kill Devil Hill to the monument; walk the flight line. Visitor center has Flyer replica and artifacts. Outdoor statue honors lifesavers' aid.
