Stunning Biplane Ride Over San Diego: Aerial Views and Expert Photography Tips
Discover everything you need to know about taking a biplane ride over San Diego for one of the most breathtaking aerial views of the region.
As a professional travel photographer, capturing those iconic, jaw-dropping images often requires perfect conditions. Unpredictable weather or timing can derail a shoot, but unexpected moments can also yield magical results.

I recently teamed up with Viator for one of their tours. Eager to photograph San Diego's coastline from above, I chose their Open Cockpit Biplane Sightseeing Ride offered by Barnstorming Adventures.
The morning was ideal—clear skies perfect for flying and postcard-worthy aerial shots. These open-cockpit biplanes seat two passengers plus the pilot, so I brought a friend along.

I quickly realized the left side had a perfect cutout for shots. Leaning over from the right into 80-mph winds was challenging—and risky for your camera or phone.

The CB radio banter made it feel like our private world above tiny houses, surfers, and beaches.

Know Before You Go:
My Barnstorming Adventures biplane flight in San Diego was booked via Viator. Prices start at $219 and can be booked here.
Print your voucher and bring it along.
For photography, choose the left seat.
Tell your pilot your preferred route, like coastal-only.
Expect the pilot in the rear seat—they fly from back.
Braid or bun long hair; ponytails won't suffice in the wind.
