Ultimate 72-Hour Family Itinerary in San Diego with Kids

Ultimate 72-Hour Family Itinerary in San Diego with Kids

A compact 3-day getaway is an ideal way to travel when juggling limited vacation time, budgets, school schedules, and kids' activities. Extended trips can be challenging, but you can still create lasting memories in just 72 hours.

Prioritizing accommodations is key. We selected The Lodge at Torrey Pines for its prime location near top attractions and direct access to hiking trails. Golf enthusiasts will love its world-class course.

Day 1

We arrived at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in time for a stunning Pacific Ocean sunset. Renowned for golf, the area also offers unparalleled coastal views. After settling into our AAA Five Diamond-rated room or suite, we headed to the heated pool. The resort provides ample on-site amenities for your first day. We chose casual dining at The Grill after swimming—kid-friendly yet with an upscale ambiance, featuring outdoor seating and fire pits for a magical evening close.

Day 2

To maximize our 72 hours, we rose early. The Lodge's proximity to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers hiking trails of varying difficulty right from the property, adjacent to the famed golf course. These paths lead to pristine beaches, fresh ocean air, and dramatic cliffs. We refueled with an exceptional breakfast at The Grill, featuring the best chocolate chip pancakes we've ever had.

The San Diego Zoo is essential for families. Committed to conservation, it educates visitors and has rescued, fostered, and bred over 165 endangered species. We spent nearly six hours exploring exhibits like Urban Jungle, Northern Frontier, and Asian Passage—flamingos and elephants were highlights. Grab a map to optimize your visit.

Next door, Balboa Park offers free admission. We enjoyed a late lunch at The Prado and strolled the botanical gardens before returning to the resort.

Tip: Use Uber for easy, affordable transport in San Diego—set up the app in advance.

We ended with a four-course dinner at A.R. Valentien, the Lodge's signature restaurant overlooking the 18th hole. It delivers exquisite cuisine and service, pleasing both kids and foodies.

Day 3

No San Diego trip skips Coronado Island. Hotel del Coronado's beaches are top-rated and welcoming to day visitors. Start with breakfast at Sheerwater, lunch at Beach + Taco Shack (must-try tacos!), and beach time—spot elaborate sandcastles or build your own. Rent gear for water fun from on-beach vendors. End with treats from Sundae’s.

Transparency: We misread LEGOLAND® hours (closes at 6 pm, not 8). Arriving at 4 pm, we maximized two hours via Reserve-and-Ride, hitting most rides and LEGO zones. Check hours carefully! On the way back, Le Papagayo's vibrant music, food, and vibe became a trip highlight.

This itinerary proves you can make the most of a short escape. Book now and cherish every moment!
