My First Scuba Certification in Bonaire: Overcoming Fear at Buddy Dive Resort

I took a deep breath and felt my body gently descend toward the ocean floor. Another inhale buoyed me back up like a yo-yo in the hands of an excited child.

“Just breathe normally.”

My instructor's advice echoed in my mind as I watched a flat white bottom-feeder dart below, its eyes as wide as mine. Mastering buoyancy—beyond conquering my fear of the deep—proved the biggest challenge of scuba diving.

Was I truly diving? Breathing underwater felt surprisingly effortless. At 40 feet deep, all my worries of panic attacks vanished as I relaxed into the experience.

As a seasoned surfer who's explored oceans worldwide, you might assume I'd be at home in the water. Not so. The ocean terrifies yet fascinates me, especially the idea of breathing underwater. For years, I'd talk about getting scuba certified, only to delay it time and again.

I arrived at Buddy Dive Resort in Bonaire with experienced diving friends. As the only beginner, I secretly hoped for another novice. The prospect of jumping into a boat dive on my first certification outing spiked my anxiety—visions of running out of air, failing to surface, or exploding lungs flooded my mind. Dramatic? Absolutely.

My instructor, David, quickly dispelled that notion (thank you, David!). We started with essential pool skills before progressing to four guided shore dives. Buddy Dive Resort prioritizes safety and adheres strictly to protocols.

Pool drills—clearing a flooded mask, switching regulators underwater—built my confidence in just four feet of water. No distractions, but plenty of reassurance for my first shore dive.

The moment I leaped from the dock, deflating my BCD into slow-motion bliss, I was hooked. Bonaire's reefs teemed with life: coral heads hid surprises, fish schools glided past unperturbed. I reached nearly 50 feet without realizing it.

Unlike horror stories of neglectful instructors, mine provided patient guidance. I felt safe and capable throughout.

I completed two more dives that day and two the next, earning certification. On day four, I ventured on my first two-tank boat dive near Klein Bonaire, home to some of Bonaire's premier reefs.

Each dive revealed wonders—pufferfish, lionfish, tarpon, eels—but my highlight was encountering four Caribbean reef squid up close.

Bonaire holds a special place in my heart. I can't wait to return for more dives!

  • Crossing the Chile-Argentina Border: Cyclists Face Swampy Challenges

“We’ll have to cycle through at least one swamp” announced Tim, suddenly self-satisfied. The three of us frowned whilst we mulled over the prospect of the impending challenge. We had only scraps of information about the remote Patagonian border crossing between Chile and Argentina, most was rumour and hearsay gleaned from other cyclists who had braved the passage before us and whom we all suspected had toyed with the truth by weaving exaggerated tales of hardship. But in amongst the hyperbole

  • Lava Falls: A Fiery Journey Through the Grand Canyon

Before us was the appropriately named Lava Falls and it was everything I had expected and so much more. Akin to staring into a fire, we looked into the river in front of us and were mesmerised. Our eyes taken on a journey our bodies weren’t sure they wanted to embrace. I was scared and there’s no other way of selling it. We were two weeks into our trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and everything that had gone before seemed to pale into insigni

  • Discover the Historic Charm of Glen Lyon: A Journey Through Scotland s Longest Valley

I walked in under an early night, handrailing on a small river out from the tiny settlement at the Bridge of Balgie. Balgie lies at the heart of the longest valley in Scotland. Glen Lyon itself is sited in the belly of the highlands and was once a military stronghold for the Picts. The glen seems to flow over with history, yet speaks of an everlasting present. There’s a bite in the air as I walk alongside the burn and out onto the open moor. On the moor it’s dark. Nothing to challenge the
