Lincoln Caverns Celebrates 90 Years of Discovery: Join the Dunlavy Family for Discovery Days

As an Added Treat...

Echo the Bat, Lincoln Caverns’ beloved mascot, joins the family for Discovery Days from 12–3 PM on both Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy photo opportunities and special gifts for young visitors.

By Patricia Ann Dunlavy, granddaughter of Myron C. Dunlavy, Sr., and daughter of Myron C. Dunlavy, Jr.—the first two generations to steward Lincoln Caverns. For the past 15 years each June, I’ve had the honor of portraying my paternal grandmother, Helen Dunlavy, sharing her perspective on our family’s cave legacy. This June, we continue the tradition with the 16th annual Discovery Days on Saturday and Sunday, June 27–28, 2020, from 9 AM to 5 PM daily. Originally launched as a 75th anniversary event, it has become an annual highlight, timed near the June 25, 1931, opening of Hi-Way-May Caverns as a show cave. Each year uncovers more artifacts—old papers, letters, and photos—enriching the stories we share. It was Helen who first spotted the ‘door in the side of the hill’ while traveling Route 22 from Virginia to Buffalo, NY, with my grandfather Myron, Sr., fulfilling his dream of owning a cave. The rest is 90 years of history we proudly celebrate! The Dunlavy family legacy blesses us daily, and we’re thrilled to share it with guests and friends.

This year’s festivities feature special historic tours, engaging programs, children’s activities, exclusive savings, and exciting surprises. Interpreters portraying key figures from the caverns’ discovery and history lead one-hour tours of Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks, departing every 30 minutes from the visitors’ center—rain or shine. Commemorate 90 years with $9 tickets for adults and children. Gem panning available for an extra fee. No reservations needed; tours fill first-come, first-served with limited capacity. Masks required in the visitors’ center and on tours.
