Vietnam Veteran and Steelers Legend Rocky Bleier Named Grand Marshal for Myrtle Beach Military Appreciation Day Parade
Myrtle Beach proudly honors its rich military heritage during Military Appreciation Day over Memorial Day Weekend. The Market Common occupies the former site of Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, which served as a vital training hub for fighters and bombers during World War II, the Cold War, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. Streets bear the names of base veterans, and Warbird Park features historic aircraft and a memorial to local service members.
We salute all who have served, are serving, or have lost loved ones in service to our nation. This year's celebration features a parade in The Market Common, with the distinguished role of Grand Marshal awarded to Rocky Bleier, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and U.S. Army Vietnam veteran.
A 1968 Notre Dame graduate, Bleier was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers but soon entered military service after his rookie NFL season. He volunteered for Vietnam with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, where an ambush left him severely wounded in both legs. Awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, Bleier defied doctors' predictions of never playing football again. After two years of intensive rehabilitation, he returned to the Steelers in 1972, contributing to four Super Bowl victories. His resilience inspires generations.
Sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, the parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, from Farrow Parkway in The Market Common. Meet Bleier afterward at the Family Picnic in Valor Memorial Garden.
