Arizona native and acclaimed chef-restaurateur Aaron Chamberlin draws on flavors from his youth to revive Southwestern cuisine—with a fresh, modern twist—at Ghost Ranch, his newest spot in south Tempe at Rural and Warner roads.
“In the early ’90s, Southwestern food was booming with its hearty plates of rice, beans, and cheese,” Chamberlin recalls. “It’s astonishing how that vibrant style has faded. My aim is a menu inspired by the traditional Southwest and Mexico, but lighter and more refined.”
Ghost Ranch reimagines classics like cowboy steak, green chile burgers, tacos, and chile Colorado braised-pork enchiladas with Chimayo chile. Dishes emphasize balanced portions, fresh ingredients, and thoughtful sauces. Highlights include shrimp ceviche, trout, vegetarian options, and salads bursting with seasonal produce and citrus notes—far from piles of tortilla chips and cheese.
“I envisioned a Southwestern spot for everyday visits—think a comforting bowl of black bean soup topped with sour cream or a crisp salad,” says Chamberlin.
Named after Georgia O’Keeffe’s New Mexico home and studio, Ghost Ranch embodies Chamberlin’s vision of contemporary Southwestern fare, spanning influences from Texas to Baja.
“We cover our region broadly and plan to evolve the Southwestern dining experience,” he adds.
Local artist and designer Gennaro Garcia crafted the interior with airy desert tones, naugahyde chairs, hanging terra-cotta lamps, textured “adobe” walls, a bare-wood ceiling pattern, and wrought-iron fixtures echoing the New Mexico flag—creating a relaxed, refreshed Southwestern vibe.
