Dallas Black Dance Theatre: Celebrating 41 Years of Artistic Excellence
Celebrating 41 seasons, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) stands as Dallas’ oldest professional dance company. This Dallas Arts Month, we spotlight its legacy, accolades, and forthcoming performances.
History
Founded in 1976 by Ann Williams, DBDT was conceived as a cultural bridge, using dance to unite diverse communities. Over four decades, the company has nurtured dancers who perform locally and worldwide.
DBDT houses two distinct ensembles: the contemporary troupe of 12 professional dancers, offering a repertoire that blends modern, ballet, and jazz, and Encore!, an eight‑member group of classically trained artists from around the globe.
Complementing the company is the Dallas Black Dance Academy, the official training arm of DBDT. The academy offers ballet, jazz, tap, and more to students aged four and up.
Achievements
DBDT’s artists have graced stages in more than 31 U.S. states and 15 countries across five continents, including appearances at two Olympic cultural events and the 1996 Olympic Festival in Atlanta.
The organization ranks as the 10th largest minority arts entity in the United States and the fourth‑largest black dance company nationwide. As a resident company at the AT&T Performing Arts Center—Dallas’ cultural hub—DBDT continues to set a benchmark for artistic excellence.
