Dallas Opera 2018-2019 Season: Five Captivating Operas

As Dallas cools, the city’s cultural calendar heats up with the Dallas Opera’s 2018‑2019 season. Five masterfully staged operas—each with a distinct blend of drama, romance, humor, and soaring music—will captivate both seasoned opera lovers and first‑time audiences alike.

All performances will take place at the elegant Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House, located in the Dallas Arts District.

The Flying Dutchman (Oct. 12‑20)
Richard Wagner’s iconic drama about a cursed sailor and doomed love returns for a season opener that promises intensity and grandeur. Bass‑baritone Greer Grimsley portrays the doomed Dutchman, while German soprano Anja Kampe makes her Dallas debut as Senta. The depth of the cast ensures a powerful experience for opera aficionados.

Carmen (Oct. 19‑Nov. 4)
Georges Bizet’s timeless masterpiece delivers passion, seduction, and relentless drama. French mezzo‑soprano Stephanie D'Oustrac will debut locally as the fiery gypsy Carmen. This opera’s irresistible combination of love and conflict makes it a perfect choice for a memorable date night.

Manon Lescaut (Mar. 1‑9)
Giuseppe Puccini’s early work follows the tragic love triangle of Manon Lescaut. The heroine faces a stark choice between a life of luxury and a life of love, creating an emotionally charged narrative that resonates with modern audiences.

La Bohème (Mar. 15‑31)
Puccini’s second Puccini opera explores the bohemian lifestyle of 19th‑century Parisian artists. Set against the vibrant Latin Quarter, this beloved story of love and loss is a staple that invites newcomers into the world of opera.

Falstaff (Apr. 26‑May 4)
Verdi’s comic adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” closes the season with humor and wit. Mark Delavan portrays Sir John Falstaff, the roguish ladies’ man, as two women conspire to teach him a lesson he will never forget. A lighthearted finale perfect for a girls’ night out.

Ticket prices for each mainstage production range from $19 to $289, while season subscriptions—covering all five operas—begin at $100.

The Dallas Opera also welcomes families with its “Family Friendly Series.” This year’s lineup includes an operatic adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale The Bremen Town Musicians and Jacques Offenbach’s charming Pepito, each accompanied by pre‑performance activities for children. Tickets start at just $5. Learn more and purchase tickets at dallasopera.org.
